Rehabilitation may sound daunting, and you likely have questions about phone calls in rehab. When considering treatment, many people wonder, Can I call a loved one during rehab? The short answer is yes! We believe family and friend support is essential to a smooth healing process. However, there are parameters around phone use in rehabilitation to ensure you stay focused and on track with your sobriety goals. Let’s discuss what phone policies look like in rehab.

What Is Rehab?

Rehabilitation is the process of receiving help for an issue that has become too large to continue life in a normal, healthy way. We offer rehabilitation for mental health disorders and addictions, such as substance use disorder (SUD) or alcohol use disorder (AUD). Notably, we also provide treatment for co-occurring disorders, such as mental disease and addiction, that occur together. Typically, rehabilitation is broken into different stages of healing. Usually, it involves intensive early treatment that requires time spent living in-center and receiving around-the-clock care.

What Are the Different Levels of Care in Rehab?

We divide our treatment programming into various levels of care that represent where an individual is in their healing journey. Many clients move through the levels linearly, as they become ready to gain more independence. Yet, we offer flexibility for clients to enter stages untraditionally.

Detox

Detoxification is removing toxins from drugs and alcohol from your body. Generally, detox is between a four and eight-day process. Detox can be challenging because you will face heightened withdrawal symptoms. However, medical detox in a treatment center is the safest and most effective method of removing substances from your body. Your doctor can administer comfort medications to make the process more comfortable.

Residential Treatment

Residential inpatient treatment is when clients live in a comfortable housing facility with other peers. They eat, sleep, attend sessions, and participate in free time while living in-center. Inpatient treatment directly follows detox. A large part of residential rehab is clients receiving 24/7 support from a staff of doctors, therapists, and case managers. However, we provide flexible alternatives for clients who need to attend day sessions and return home at night.

Outpatient Treatment

After inpatient treatment, clients transition into outpatient care. They moved out of our facility but still attend daily sessions with their therapists and counselors. Because clients are ready for more independence, the focus is on fostering resilience and motivation to stay sober. As such, sessions teach valuable skills like emotional regulation, relapse prevention, and trigger management.

Aftercare

Aftercare is the final stage of treatment, but it lasts for the rest of the individual’s life. That is to say, they have a supportive community for life through Aliya Health Group. After outpatient, they can fully return home and attend a regular support group, or move into sober housing with peers. Either way, they can stay in touch with their caseworker for alumni support.

Can I Make Phone Calls in Rehab?

With professional help, you can experience healing from addiction and mental health struggles. That said, we invite all clients to begin the rehabilitation process and follow our evidence-based programming. There are some rules in treatment that are designed for your optimal healing. People often wonder about the phone policy in rehab. This depends on the treatment center and the stage of recovery.

Most commonly, phone calls are allowed with certain parameters around their use. For example, for the first few days during detoxification, phone calls are not allowed. This is to prevent additional stress and grief, as detox is a challenging step where clients need to focus on their recovery. Additionally, cell phones will often be prohibited in-center during inpatient rehab. This is both to protect other guests’ privacy and to hinder negative outside influence. For instance, some people may feel tempted to contact their drug dealer. Or they may feel swayed by outside influences to leave treatment too soon when leaving would likely lead to relapse.

However, because having contact with friends and family is essential, phone calls are allowed after completing detoxification. When cell phones aren’t allowed, clients are provided with landline phones from which to make calls. In summary, phone rules in rehab allow calls after detoxification but limit them to certain parameters during inpatient and outpatient treatment.

Why Is It Important to Avoid Distractions in Rehab?

We know having a support system in rehab is imperative to healing! As such, we offer family visitations, resources for families, and family counseling so they can be involved in your healing. However, clients experience different guidelines and limitations depending on the level of care they’re in.

When it comes to the landline policy over cell phones, this is partially to remove distractions. For instance, it stops clients from taking photos or videos of their peers. It also helps them not to falter in their recovery due to seeing negative content online, such as partying. Markedly, it’s highly important that clients avoid distractions that would slow or hinder their recovery. Everyone wants to experience total-body healing during treatment, but it’s easy to waver in your motivation when you face triggers. Your rehab team is there to help you achieve healing by making it as straightforward as possible. Thus, the phone policy in rehab is for your ultimate good.

Other Rules to Know Before Rehab Starts

There are a few more important things to know before entering rehab to help you understand the process. Rehab is designed to be a time of healing and freedom over addiction and mental illness. However, it is also a place of structure in order to allow that healing to occur. For one thing, treatment centers are safe places where everyone must engage in non-discriminatory, respectful behavior. Additionally, rehab centers have visitation policies depending on each level of care. Visitation is restricted to certain days and times in order to keep clients focused on their own wellness. Also, it’s imperative that you attend the therapy and counseling sessions on your schedule, so tardiness is only allowed for special circumstances.

What Happens During Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

During rehabilitation, you will engage in a mixture of traditional and holistic therapy sessions to unpack the reasons behind your issue and find healing.

Psychotherapy for Drug and Alcohol Addiction

Traditional psychotherapy is a behavioral therapy that focuses on the roots of your behaviors, thoughts, and actions. Different therapy programs have different emphases. Yet, each behavioral therapy method centers around identifying and changing negative patterns of thought and action.

Holistic Treatment for Drug and Alcohol Addiction

Holistic therapies are experiential activities that help your body, mind, and spirit heal together. Because recovery involves more than just a mental emphasis, we offer therapeutic treatments that provide whole-body wellness.
